Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is where horses, a licensed mental health therapist and an equine specialist work together
with clients to facilitate healing in the context of psychotherapy. The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) defines Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) as a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional designed to address specific treatment issues presented by a psychotherapy client. This unique method enables clients to learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviors and patterns.
EAP utilizes this relationship with the horse as a way to reflect client's experiences and facilitate change. Therapeutic results begin immediately and it can be used with a variety of populations such as children, teens, adults and groups. In fact, EAP can be used in counseling with individuals and families.
It has been used in diverse settings with diverse populations, producing impressive results and it used to treat behavioral issues, ADHD, phobias, eating disorders, abuse issues, depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions, relation problems, communication issues and so much more.
This model uses only groundwork (no mounted experiences). This naturally empowering approach is about connecting, inviting the client to explore a relationship with a horse in an unbound state and discover their own inner restrictions while accessing a more fluid and easeful way of being.
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential learning approach with horses which promotes the development of life skills. The focus on life skills can be used for personal growth, to reengage students in academic learning, to provide protective factors for at risk children and teens and exploration of professional pursuits like team building, leadership development and productivity increase.
Typically, the clients participate in activity with the horses on the ground and a trained facilitator guides the learning process. Sessions are facilitated by a professional who has training and certifications that qualifies them to work safely with horses, have knowledge and skill in experiential learning methods and have been trained in facilitation.
Equine assisted learning is typically offered to individuals and groups and lessons are always on the ground in the EAGALA model.
Horse Powered Reading® integrates social-emotional learning with academics; thus allowing students see and experience reading with their entire mind, body and emotions by creating metaphors for the skills involved in reading.
Issues affecting learning are identified and made visible by the client, through the use of obstacles (toys and props), which symbolize stumbling blocks that get in the way of understanding
Memory retention and recall improve dramatically when movement anchors learning
Issues getting in the way of academic and social emotional growth are addressed by our expert team in the moment
Students are allowed to choose their own horse to work with, just as they would choose a book to read
Students are then given an opportunity to connect with their chosen “book”
Sessions allow students a chance to reflect on what they are experiencing and provide an opportunity to create new patterns of learning in a supported environment
Horse Powered Reading® focuses on the learning process for the individual and builds upon children’s natural curiosity and determination.
During sessions, students are allowed to make discoveries and experiment with knowledge firsthand.
Our facilitators are trained to see what tools (toys and props) the child uses to choose and connect with their book (horse) and how that connection is made.
The interaction between client and horse gives the facilitator insight into what the client is experiencing inside and what patterns are working or not working for them. That interplay allows for profound learning to take place.
Through this process, the horse creates an opportunity for immediate feedback and experiential learning to take place.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing; this treatment targets the emotions, images, sensations and cognitive beliefs that typically result from having experienced trauma. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that has been shown to be effective in resolving trauma, and has been thoroughly studied in treating PTSD. The basic definition of trauma is an experience that overwhelms your ability to cope and changes how your nervous system responds when you are stressed. EMDR, with or without horses, helps to reset the nervous system so that it is more balanced. This allows you to choose your responses to stresses rather than reacting with agitation or shutting down. EMDR helps to restore your ability to return to a more balanced emotional state and to be fully present to yourself, others and the world around you.
